Cliven Bundy snubs letters from BLM

BUNKERVILLE, Nev. -- Local rancher Cliven Bundy continues to ignore the federal government after taking his cattle back, defying a federal court order. And that's not all he is ignoring.

He says he has received at least four certified letters from the Bureau of Land Management, but they remain unopened because he doesn't't recognize the BLM's authority. The BLM will not release information on the content of the letters.

"I'm not going to spend my time, away from you the people, and worry about a lawsuit," Cliven Bundy told his supporters.

Bundy's grazed has cattle illegally for 20 years on federal land. He owes the government $1 million in fees. Two weeks ago, the BLM started rounding the cattle up, but armed supporters showed up in force to stop the roundup. Fearing violence, the BLM shut down the operation.

"Isn't that what fear is? Not knowing," said Ryan Bundy, Cliven Bundy's son.

Ryan Bundy grew up on the ranch and says he is now attempting to rehabilitate 20 calves that were among the cattle confiscated by the BLM.

Cliven Bundy and his ranch could face costs associated with interfering with the court-ordered cattle roundup this past weekend.

"They've been trying to make me accountable for 20 years of any kind of expense or anything. But what I'm saying is they don't even have any constitutional jurisdiction," he said.

Supporters say they're waiting for the feds to react. Armed protesters continue to surround the Bundy ranch and are even blocking a county road. Some of the supporters attempted Thursday to keep a Channel 8 news crew from entering the area, despite it being a public road.

"You're trying to start trouble and you're standing with that camera in my face," one protester said.

The armed men say they'll be at the site for weeks to come to defend the Bundy family.
