Construction to take 2-4 weeks to repair I-15 at Cajon Pass

LAS VEGAS - Construction crews are working to repair the portion of southbound I-15 which collapsed Friday due to heavy rain.

The repairs are expected to cost $3 million and cause some major delays at Cajon Pass for those traveling between Las Vegas and California.

The California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans, said drivers should expect anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes delays when traveling through Cajon Pass.

There are currently four lanes open to traffic on I-15 southbound between SR 138 to Cleghorn Road.

Officials say drivers should slow down in the area and not change lanes because crews reduced the width of the lanes.

The emergency construction will permanently repair the road.

"The contractor is actually going to be working two 12 hour shifts, 24 hours a day right now. And what they're doing is they're saw-cutting the outside lanes that collapsed and removing that whole area so they can begin the backfill, so motorists will see work taking place behind the K-rail on the far left," said Terry Kasinga, Chief of Public Affairs, Caltrans District 8.

Caltrans officials estimate that the repair work should take between two and four weeks.

It's recommended to travel in the early morning hours or late at night to avoid long delays.
