Consumer Advocates Warn About Debit Card Scam

LAS VEGAS - The official start of the holiday shopping season is just a few days away. Before you buy anything with a debit card, however, 8 on Your Side has a warning about a new scam.

Thieves are posing as repairmen for machines that businesses use to swipe debit and credit cards. The thieves will install a device that steals customers' card numbers and pins.

Criminals often seek debit card and pin numbers more than credit card numbers, because debit card and pin numbers can more easily be converted to cash.

Consumer advocates recommend shoppers pay with cash whenever possible. If you have to use a card, use a credit card that you can pay off quickly. If you use a debit card, run it as a credit card to avoid typing in your pin number.

If you don't notify the bank in a very timely matter about a fraud concerning your debit card, you could lose hundreds of dollars.

Credit card companies and credit purchases often offer a bit more protection and opportunities for refunds.

If you have a consumer complaint you want investigated, contact 8 on Your Side at 650-1907 or email us.
