Cool at School: Band Raises Money for Unique NYC Opportunity

HENDERSON, Nev. - Start spreading the news. The Foothill High School marching band is leaving, not today, but next year for New York City to perform in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The cost is enormous, and every band member is raising money for the opportunity while they hone their musical skills.

"We're one of six high school bands to be selected for 2014, so it's an honor. In addition to marching in the parade, we will be playing a concert at Carnegie Hall that Tuesday. Not many people can say they played at Carnegie Hall," said Foothill High School Director of Bands Travis Pardee.

The parade gets the headline, but playing at historic Carnegie Hall may be a bigger moment for the band. The chance to perform at the legendary venue trumps the parade for trumpet player Markus Gamett.

"I am so excited to play in Carnegie Hall and the Macy's Day parade. That's going to be so much fun for our entire band," he said.

Pardee and his contingent recently returned from this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on what can be considered a scouting trip.

"You can check out the hotels we're going to be staying in, the rehearsal sites. Right now, it's a lot of travel preparations," he said.

Starting next week, Pardee will begin meeting with designers and choreographers.

He credits the work of those at the middle school level for making this band so good. The musicians credit years of playing together, as well as tenacity.

"The hard work paid off. During marching band season, we are always out here. We're always practicing. We're always together," said trumpet player Heather Hamilton.

"All these long rehearsals that we have - we go eight hour, nine hour rehearsals on Saturday morning. So, it pays off to know that our hard work gets us places," said alto saxophone player Kolten Anderson.

The cost of making the trip to New York City next year is approximately $600,000. Each band member is tasked with raising $2,000. Foothill High School hosts an online auction to raise money for the trip with several items up for bid.
