Cool at School: Principal Shaves Head for Reading Achievements

LAS VEGAS - With the sight of a hastily arranged barber shop, you sense things aren't going to end well for Dorothy Eisenberg Elementary School Principal Gary Bugash.

Mr. Bugash, however, is all smiles. Eisenberg's students just passed their accelerated reading goals. Principal Bugash promised he would succumb to the clippers and shave his head if students reached their goals.

Like the efforts of the stylist shaving Bugash's head, Eisenberg's reading efforts were tenacious. That includes Collin Bugash, who also happens to be the son of Principal Bugash. He admits he didn't really want to see his dad go bald.

Isis Diaz, a fifth grader, says all the reading got her attention. "It excites me. For instance, if I finish a chapter and then I come back, it's really suspending," she said.

In the end, Bugash's head still needs a little work, but at the same time, he's never looked so good.

"We want to motivate students to read and get excited, but we don't have the resources. So, I thought this was a way to get them excited about reading," he said. "My hair is going to grow back. Literacy is going to say with them forever."
