County Auction Brings in Huge Crowd

LAS VEGAS -- Organizers of Clark County's government surplus auction say people go there for the same reason they go to casinos. They say it's the lure of getting rich quick by finding the deal of the century. There were several bargains available Saturday, if you could keep up with the auctioneer.

"I raised my hand for a couple things, and I didn't know if they were on me or the next person, said Kyle Anderson after a fast paced bidding war. "I was like, am I still up? Am I about to win or lose here?

It's held three times a year, bringing in an average of 1,230 bidders each time. Everything has either been used or acquired by McCarran Airport, Las Vegas Police, and other government agencies.

"Going back into the general fund is a good thing. It helps replenish the new vehicles that are going to be purchased in the state and also the county," said Patrick Richards who has been to 10 auctions. "I think it benefits everybody overall."

Last year the auctions brought in about $900,000 for the county.

"I bought three Harley Davidson's which I'll take home try to clean up," said experienced bidder Terry Dodson. "One for my wife, one for me, and maybe I'll sell one."

If Kyle learns from the more experience buyers, he might make some money too.

"'They've been used, and they'll take some new parts, and make them as good as new," said Kyle. "They'll re-sell them for twice as much as they bought them for."

Leaders of TNT Auction urge anyone interested to register before the event to avoid long lines. All you need is a valid ID. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, May 18.
