Culinary scholarships allows high school seniors to go to college debt free

LAS VEGAS - Paying for college has never been more expensive, but there are full ride scholarship opportunities for students who want a future in the hospitality industry, which allows high school seniors to go to college, debt free.

Ben Sison is a sophomore at UNLV.  Sison has a job at a local restaurant, but it's not to pay for college.

"With no debt and no financial stress at all that just gives me so much more, I guess just room inside of me to put the focus into school," Sison said.

Sison is the recipient of a full-ride scholarship which was offered by the Epicurean Charitable Foundation, also know as ECF.

"It's just a giant weight off your shoulders." Sison said.

The organization offers up to $33,000 in scholarship money for students who attend college in Nevada and up to $48,000 for those who choose to go out of state.

However, applicants have to get a degree in hospitality.

"We pay for everything, so we take that burden off your back," said Michael Kennedy, Epicurean Charitable Foundation.  "We fundraise throughout the year. We have many events."

Other requirements for the students consist of a 3.0 Grade Point Average; a family combined income of $70,000 or less and recommendation letters from school counselors.

"We're looking for students who have a passion for the hospitality business, and we're looking to raise up the next great leaders of hospitality," Kennedy said.

Since 2001 the organization has awarded local students more than one million dollars in scholarships, but the program goes beyond the financial help.

"We provide mentorship, so we don't just give you a scholarship and pay for your school," said Kennedy.  "We provide one-on-one mentorship, so each year students get assigned a different board member to be their mentor."

"It's giving me a bigger advantage among my peers just because of all the experience and mentorship that has been given to me," Sison said.

The organization is taking applications until March 13.
