Cyclist dead, two others injured in collision with car

LAS VEGAS - A bicyclist is dead and two others in the hospital after they were hit while riding on a Henderson road Saturday morning, according to police.

The collision happened on Via Inspirada south of Volunteer Boulevard around 8:00 a.m.

"It's sad. I was supposed to be out here an hour and a half ago, I could have been that person," said Shannon Schmitz, cyclist.

Investigators believe the driver of the Ford Escape may have clipped the three riders.

“There's no forgiveness there, it's not like if you hit another car, you know that's a fender bender. You hit that cyclist, we die," Schmitz said.

One bicyclist died at the scene of the crash. The other two were transported to St. Rose Dominican Hospital - Siena Campus with moderate injuries, Officer Rod Pena, Henderson Police Department said.

While bicyclists can't control what cars do, they can equip themselves with protective gear. Mirrors for bikes can give riders a better view of the traffic around them.

"They call them a third eye on your helmet." Esteban Sanchez, Owner, Golden Crown Bicycles.

Saturday's deadly collision is a stark reminder for commuters to remember to make room for cyclists.

"Some of the streets, they have the lines for bicycles. As motorists, we have to respect that and then we have to give the space to the riders," Sanchez said.

According to police, the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
