Desai Guilty of Murder in Hep C Case

LAS VEGAS -- A verdict has been reached on whether a former endoscopy clinic owner and his former employee are guilty of murder, patient neglect and other criminal charges in a 2007 hepatitis C outbreak.

The verdict is currently being read: Dr. Dipak Desai has been found guilty of second degree murder and several of the other charges against him, including insurance fraud, performance of act in reckless disregard of persons or property resulting in substantial bodily harm; and criminal neglect of patients resulting in substantial bodily harm.

Nurse anesthesiologist Ronald Lakeman was found not guilty on the second degree murder charge.

Desai and Lakeman were each facing the following charges:

  • 10 counts of insurance fraud;
  • seven counts of performance of act in reckless disregard of persons or property resulting in substantial bodily harm;
  • one count of theft;
  • seven counts of criminal neglect of patients resulting in substantial bodily harm;
  • two counts of obtaining money under false pretenses; and,
  • one count of second degree murder.

After the verdict was read, both men were handcuffed and remanded into custody.
