Dipak Desai to Spend Life in Prison

LAS VEGAS -- The former doctor found guilty of murder, patient neglect and other criminal charges will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Dipak Desai was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 18 years. He was sentenced on several charges, including second degree murder.

Desai was at the center of the largest hepatitis C outbreak in Las Vegas history. He and a nurse, Ronald Lakeman, at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada were found guilty of re-using vials of medicine on multiple patients during colonoscopy procedures – causing the hepatitis outbreak which affected hundreds of patients and claimed the lives of two of Desai's former patients. The murder charge was for the death of Rodolfo Meana in April 2012. A second patient, Michael Washington, died in August 2013. The district attorney could pursue an additional murder charge in that case.

Clark County District Court Judge Valerie Adair said there was an abundance of evidence that Desai had disregard for his patients. She also said a fair sentence must take into account there was more than one victim.

Lakeman was sentenced to 20 years with the possibility of parole after eight years. He had been acquitted on some of the charges, including the murder charge.
