Dispensaries have difficulty finding marijuana to sell

LAS VEGAS - Medical marijuana went on sale in southern Nevada Monday morning when the first dispensary opened its doors for business. That's just one of several planning to open in the coming weeks and months.

One major issue that dispensaries are running into is the difficulty in finding marijuana to sell.

Las Vegas Releaf already has a menu showing the various strains of medical marijuana, but it doesn't have any product yet.

"We don't know what strains, or concentrates or what edibles we're going to have yet," said Michael Hayford, Las Vegas Releaf.

Although it's just steps away from the Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas Releaf is in the city's jurisdiction, not the county. That means cultivators doing business with them must abide by the city's rules.

"Our first relationship with a cultivator was county based. They made a decision not to source to us because it was more costly for them to deliver product to us here in the city than to our competitor in the county," Hayford said.

Selling to them would cost $20,000 up front for a license fee and not many cultivators want to pay that, according to Las Vegas Releaf.

The Nevada Wellness Center is experiencing the same thing.

They have renovated an old bank on Valley View Boulevard.

Inside there's an information center, but no medical pot for sale.

"As soon as we get some quality product we're going to open," said Andre Rhodes, Nevada Wellness Center.

Both locations don't want to pay more than they should and they don't want to run out of product once they get it.

"A month away, we're pretty excited," Hayford said.

Both dispensaries, along with seven others in southern Nevada, plan to open by November.

They want to work with the city through the growing pains of this new and unique industry to the valley.
