DMV investigators catch fugitive on the run for 25 years

LAS VEGAS - Investigators with the Nevada DMV captured a federal fugitive who had been on the run for 25 years after escaping from a Minnesota prison.

Robert Frederick Nelson, 64, of North Las Vegas escaped from federal prison in 1992. He headed to Nevada where he committed a string of violent felonies.

Nelson was arrested in June after he applied for a renewal of his Nevada identification card. The DMV's facial recognition system showed the same person had previously held a driver's license in the name of Craig James Pautler.

Investigators learned that Nelson had a string of convictions under both names. Nelson was released to U.S. Marshals.

the Nevada charges were dropped against him to facilitate the extradition.

He will serve his remaining sentence in Minnesota and additional time for his escape.
