HENDERSON, Nev. -- A 1-year-old boy is dead after he was attacked by the family dog Friday night.
Family members say they and the boy, Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan, were at the child's grandmother's house for the toddler's first birthday party when the attack happened. Jeremiah was playing with the 6-year-old Matstiff-Rhodesian mix when the dog clamped his jaw on the boy's head and shook him. The grandmother and others in the house tried to free the boy.
"My mom, the whole time, tried to grab his head and [kept] his neck sturdy because the dog was shaking him so bad," said Chris Shahan, Jeremiah's father. "He broke his neck from what I've found out."
Paramedics were called. He was rushed to St. Rose Dominican Hospital - Siena Campus. He was then taken by helicopter to University Medical Center. He died Saturday morning from his injuries. He turned 1 year old on Thursday.
The dog has been taken by Henderson Animal Control officers. It will be observed for 10 days to determine if it has rabies. It has been declared vicious and will be euthanized when the observation period is over.
The family has had the dog since it was a puppy. The child had been around him since he was born. The family says they have not seen any aggressive behavior from the dog in the past.
