DOJ applauds Metro in deadly force report

LAS VEGAS -- The Department of Justice has released its final report on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's policies and practices when it comes to the use of deadly force.

According to the report, Metro has completed 90 percent of the recommendations made by the justice department and is currently working on 6 percent of the required steps. Three percent of the recommendations are not complete and one was not able to be assessed. The recommendations not completed included homicide detectives video recording all interviews for officer-involved shootings and the police needing to cooperate during the investigation of an officer-involved shooting. Metro did make changes in its training and officer-involved shootings went down 48 percent from 2010 to last year.

"We applaud LVMPD for their progress in completing 90 percent of the recommendations. No one should take lightly the accomplishments that have been made thus far, and no one should minimize the challenges that remain ahead," said Ronald Davis, the director of the justice department's Office of Community Policing Services.

Sheriff Doug Gillespie reacted to the news by saying it was the proudest he has ever been of the department in his 34 years there.

Metro volunteered to undergo the review after a series of officer-involved shootings in 2011. The report focused on the past five years.
