LAS VEGAS -- A downtown Las Vegas neighborhood has been designated as one of the top 10 great neighborhoods for 2010.
John S. Park, which includes two subdivisions primarily built between the 1930's to the mid-1950's, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The area is bordered by Charleston Blvd. (east of Las Vegas Blvd.) and Franklin Ave. and 5th Place and So. 10th St.
The American Planning Association announced the designation noting its distinguished residential architecture, engaged citizens, access to public transit and extensive tree cover.
"John S. Park has long been a gem in our downtown core," said Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese, who represents the area that includes the neighborhood. "It's an historic neighborhood where the residents have really come together to create a wonderful community."
Other great neighborhoods around the country include Cathedral Historic District in Sioux Falls, So. Dakota; Frank Lloyd Wright Historic Neighborhood in Oak Park, Illinois; Back Bay in Boston, Massachusetts; and Hyde Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.
