Dramatic police body camera video shows shooting

LAS VEGAS - Dramatic video released by Metro Police shows the moment a suspect pulled out a gun and started firing at two police officers this week.

One officer was struck by gun fire and the second officer was saved by his utility belt. The suspect was killed.

According to Metro, the suspect, 25-year-old Miguel Salas, shot a total of nine times at the officers. The officers retreated and ducked for cover as they fired back. The Clark County Coroner determined it was a bullet fired by the police that killed Salas.

The intense shooting was all caught on body camera video which was shown during Metro's news conference Friday.

Two Metro police officers responded to a call about a stolen cell phone near Tropicana and Arville Tuesday. When they approached Salas, the situation got tense quickly.

Officer Richard Nelson had his body camera rolling the entire time. Police are heard asking Salas to exit the truck multiple times. Salas refuses. Officer Nelson's partner comes around the truck to the driver's window to help. Officer Nelson is actually holding onto Salas' left hand through the window. Salas pulls out a gun located near his left leg and starts shooting. Officer Nelson, who is shot, retreats from the back of the truck while the other officer retreats from the front.

Officer Nelson fired 10 rounds striking Salas in the head once.

Assistant Sheriff Tom Roberts says it's been a very stressful time for police who have been coming across very violent armed suspects in recent weeks.

"You know, it's been a tough month for us. We've had quite a few officer-involved shootings in the past month. Everyone of those has involved somebody or a suspect trying to harm us or our officers," he said.

This year, there's been 15 officer-involved shootings, so far. This weeks marks the 7th deadly one.

In this case, Officer Nelson's partner was also struck by a bullet but it was stopped by his utility belt. Police say this shooting could have been much worse.

Officer Nelson is at home on paid administrative leave and recovering with his family.
