Driver in deadly hit-and-run asked for 'forgiveness'

LAS VEGAS -- The driver in a deadly hit-and-run crash "became emotional and asked for forgiveness" after he told police he was the driver involved in the collision, according to the arrest report.

Edward Charles Barber, 49, turned himself into police one day after the crash that claimed the life of 74-year-old Dare Stenberg Farr. The crash happened May 7 at Charleston Boulevard and Arville Street. Police say Barber was driving eastbound on Charleston when a car traveling westbound made a left turn in front of him. Barber told police he saw the light turn yellow and the car turn, but he couldn't avoid the collision. Farr died from her injuries and her son, George Applegate, 54, who was driving, suffered injuries.

According to Barber, he couldn't avoid the crash.

"I shouldn't have done that and I'm very sorry that I hit him, once i heard that a woman was fatally injured, I turned myself in," Barber said. "He had that flashing yellow arrow and he just turned out in front of me. Right out there, what could I do? I tried, I really didn't have time swerve or do anything, plus I had a whole truck of pallets.
"

Witnesses told police, Barber ran from the scene. According to the arrest report, Barber said he ran because he didn't have a valid driver's license or insurance for the vehicle.

Barber said he is truly sorry for the crash and just panicked. He said the decision to turn himself in was the right thing to do.

"As soon as I walked into the police station, I started bawling, crying," Barber said. "It's a tough thing, you know, seeing someone die."

Barber is facing charges of felony hit and run, driving without a driver's license and no proof of insurance.
