Drivers Beware: 'Car-nado' coming to Spaghetti Bowl

LAS VEGAS - Getting around the Spaghetti Bowl is going to get a bit complicated in the coming months. On Thursday, NDOT announced major ramp closures that will start next week.

It's all part of Project Neon, a road construction project to widen I-15.

Direct access from I-15 to US 95 in both directions will be limited starting later next week. The closures are expected to cause traffic to spill onto surface streets.

Project Neon is forcing lengthy closures around the Spaghetti Bowl. The Nevada Department of Transportation is calling it "Carnado."

Find alternate routes

Starting Wednesday, through February of next year, the I-15 ramps to US 95 will be closed in both directions.

"It's very busy, like everybody commutes. For me, it's from North Vegas on down to here cause it's the way you can get on the freeway closest to me," said driver Lavonta Goffner.

And that's not all.

The I-15 north and southbound ramps to Martin Luther King will also be closed during the same time, as well as the US 95 north ramp to MLK.

"We are asking motorists to plan for additional time for their daily commutes and also use alternative routes," said Dale Keller, project manager, Project Neon.

NDOT has a number of detours in place during the four-month long closures. The MLK exit ramp will be repurposed to connect I-15 north and US 95 north.

However, traffic will be reduced to one lane.

The rest of the detours take drivers to surface streets including: Charleston, Lake Mead and MLK. NDOT plans to readjust the traffic signal rotations to accommodate the additional traffic on these roads.

"We know it's going to get worse before it gets better and we ask for patience as we get moving with this project and really kick off the construction," Keller said.

The closures are to make way for future construction of an HOV flyover structure from I-15 north to US 95 north.

"I think what they're trying to do with Project Neon might help with the traffic cause Vegas is really growing," Goffner said.
