Driving You Crazy: Black signs near freeways

LAS VEGAS - A viewer asks for the meaning behind black signs that depict a billboard and a badge.

Those black signs are the Nevada Department of Transportation's electronic trailblazer signs.

The Regional Transportation Commission operates the signs when freeways are closed. The signs provide information regarding detours to surface streets. These signs mostly appear on streets near freeways that have been identified as possible detour routes.

RTC uses live cameras, software and contact with NHP to inform drivers of traffic changes. The signs help RTC determine which surface streets to detour drivers toward and help motorists navigate road closures.
