Driving You Crazy: Different School Zone Speed Limits

LAS VEGAS - A viewer wonders why some school zones post 15 mph speed limits, while others post 25 mph speed limits.

The 15 mph speed limit for a school zone is determined by how close the road in question is to the school. Roads right next to a school property typically warrant a 15 mph speed limit.

Roads that are not adjacent to school property, but will be crossed by pedestrians to get to and from the school, typically get the 25 mph speed limit.

Some roads will receive lower school zones, even if they aren't adjacent to schools. Engineers will do this if the road has a higher speed limit, is wide or has a high pedestrian volume to increase pedestrian safety.
