Driving You Crazy: Illegal handicapped parking

LAS VEGAS - A valley couple says they are frustrated by drivers who illegally park in handicapped spaces near Lake Mead Boulevard and Tenaya Way.

Traffic8 alerted Metro Police. A Metro representative says the department knows that illegal parking in handicapped spaces is a concern, but it's not their top priority.

Metro's primary traffic concern is reducing deaths, the representative said. Metro says drivers can take a number of steps to reduce deaths on the road, including: always wearing a seatbelt, not driving while impaired, focusing on the road, stopping at red lights and stop signs and watching out for pedestrians.

Metro says they focus on speed enforcement, because speeding can lead to traffic fatalities. Traffic officers who stop speeders can also uncover secondary violations such as drunk driving or not wearing a seatbelt.

From 2008 to 2012, 234 people died and 784 people were seriously injured on Nevada roads.

The Nevada Legislature recognizes police cannot focus too many resources on enforcing handicapped parking, when there is still a significant number of murders, robberies and traffic deaths.

The state has empowered Metro Police to use volunteers to issue citations for handicapped parking violations.
