Driving You Crazy: Inaccurate Freeway Message Boards

LAS VEGAS - A viewer wants to know why freeway message boards broadcast inaccurate information about traffic incidents or neglect to broadcast any information at all.

The viewer points to an accident that occurred March 13 that was not reported on the message boards.

Regional Transportation Commission FAST uses a wall of live cameras, software and communication with Nevada Highway Patrol and Nevada Department of Transportation to inform drivers of traffic conditions.

RTC FAST officials say when an incorrect lane is reported on the message boards, it could be because disabled vehicles are moved to the shoulder quickly by NHP or Freeway Service Patrol. So, the message board may be outdated by the time motorists reach a crash site.

Technicians looked into the March 13 crash near U.S. 95 and Eastern Avenue. After that crash, RTC FAST sent messages to four signs, but one sign was down and didn't post this message. That sign has since been repaired.
