Driving You Crazy: Limited Lighting in Summerlin

LAS VEGAS - A viewer suspects the street lights along 215 Beltway near Summerlin need to be changed. The viewer says the area is always dark when he drives through at night.

The lights won't be changed, however, because it's meant to be a darker stretch of freeway. No more street lights are planned for it within the boundaries of Summerlin.

When designing the portion of the 215 that passes through Summerlin, Clark County needed right-of-way permission from the Howard Hughes Corporation, which is the developer of Summerlin.

Howard Hughes Corporation executives granted the right-of-way, however, they put a restriction on the beltway's street lighting as it winds through Summerlin. They wanted residents to enjoy valley views from the foothills and not have those views washed out by freeway lights. Drivers will only find street lighting at interchanges, and the street lighting in Summerlin is designed to reflect less light.

This stretch of the 215 through Summerlin was finished more than a decade ago, and there are no plans to go back and add more lighting along the freeway.
