Driving You Crazy: School Crossing Zones

LAS VEGAS - A viewer asks why some school zones flash during off-hours, even at times when children are not present.

The viewer cites the area of Carnegie Road between Paseo Verde Parkway and Horizon Ridge Parkway, where the school zone flashes between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. when children are not typically crossing the street.

They are on, because kids may be there. When drivers see those flashers at any time, they should slow down and treat it as an active school zone.

All school flashing beacons in Henderson include the phrase, "when children are present." The city operates the flashers at times when children are known to be present to alert drivers.

If the flashers are running earlier or later than regular school bell times, it's because the city has received a written request from the school to run them, usually to cover early bird or make-up sessions, sports, band, theatre or other off-hour activities.

The safest thing to do is slow down to the school speed limit whenever flashing beacons are operating to minimize the risk of missing a kid going to school at an unusual time.

Many swim practices take place at 6 a.m., so drivers cannot be certain how early or late kids will be in school zones. Those flashers indicate kids may be there.
