Driving You Crazy: Work Zone Speed Limit on 215

LAS VEGAS - The rubberized asphalt paving on 215 is finished, so many drivers are wondering why the temporary 55 mph speed limit is still in effect.

Thousands of recycled tires were used to create the new highway surface, which now makes 215 a soft, spongy and quiet freeway. The paving is complete, but the 55 mph work zone signs remain.

Clark County officials say that is because work is still being done. The reduced speed limit must remain as crews finish a few remaining tasks including: bridge patching, joint work, painting, sign installation, landscaping, and general repairs.

Once these tasks are complete, the project must pass a final inspection that confirms the contractor completed everything. If anything is left undone, the contractor has 30 days to complete it.

Work zone speed limits are designed to protect drivers and workers. The speed reduction on 215 will likely remain in place until early January, then the normal speed limit of 65 mph will be reinstated.
