LAS VEGAS -- The Egg & I on Sahara Avenue reopens Monday, more than a month after a car barreled over its patio and halfway into the restaurant sending 10 people to the hospital.
Several employees said they are excited to get back to work. They say their co-workers are like a second family, and Monday's opening will be like a homecoming for all of them.
"Everybody around us, people that were walking on the street came in to help," said General Manager Sarah Gehringer. "Taking someone from underneath a car or soothing their fears."
Some of the people injured at the Egg & I that day are still recovering from broken bones and cracked ribs. Gehringer narrowly escaped injury.
"I had a server next to me on both sides, I grabbed them, and pushed them both back into the kitchen."
Before the dust cleared, and with the car engine still revving, Gehringer and fellow employees jumped into action. They helped wherever they could.
"They're here for me whenever I need them," said Gehringer. "To have everybody back together, it's like everybody was on summer vacation, and summer vacation is over, and we're back together as a family again."
A family brought even closer by disaster.
Eight boulders have been positioned between the restaurant's patio and the street. Managers say the boulders are so heavy they needed cranes to be placed, and will serve as a barrier to keep people safe. The Egg & I on Sahara reopens at 6 a.m. Monday.
