Elderly man hit, killed crossing Paradise Road

LAS VEGAS - An elderly man was hit and killed crossing Paradise Road near the Hard Rock Casino late Tuesday night.

Metro detectives say the 85-year-old man was crossing the street north of Harmon when he was struck by a 1993 Ford Mustang headed north on Harmon.  He was rushed to Sunrise Hospital in critical condition, but was later pronounced dead.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.  Detectives said he was trying to reach his car, which was parked at the Embassy Suites across Paradise.

The 22-year-old driver who hit the man stayed at the scene.  Police say he was not impaired and is not expected to face charges.

"The pedestrian is clearly at fault in this accident," said Robert Stauffer with Metro's fatal detail.

Stauffer noted that a controlled crosswalk with lines and lights was located only a couple hundred feet away.

"This is another reminder to use crosswalks," said Stauffer.  "Especially when it's this close and especially at night."

Detectives did not immediately release the name of the victim, pending notification of his family.

This is the 89th traffic related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction for 2017.
