Election Officials Prepare for Early Voting, General Election

LAS VEGAS - The November election is rapidly approaching, and in a few days, voters will be able to vote early. Voter registration for the November election ends Tuesday.

The Clark County Election Department is currently training teams and getting ready for the first ballots to come in Saturday when early voting starts.

Those who are not registered must do so in person at the Clark County Election Department by 9 p.m. Tuesday, or they will not be allowed to vote. In-person registration can be done at the Clark County Election Center at 965 Trade Drive, Suite A in North Las Vegas or at the Clark County Election Department office at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

Election officials expect a large turnout when early voting starts this weekend. Nearly 400,000 people took advantage of early voting in 2008.

"Early voting is an enormously popular program," said Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax. "I know there are traditionalists who say we should only vote on Election Day, and one of the good things about early voting is you can vote on Election Day."

Secretary of State Ross Miller says he hopes everything runs smoothly as results come in.

"Well over half of Nevadans I think will participate and cast their ballots prior to the Election Day, so we're just hoping for a smooth election," he said. "I can tell you from the chief of elections standpoint, I'm just praying for wide margins so we don't have recounts."

Sample ballots are already being mailed to voters. Voters will want to bring them to the polls, since the ballots contain every race and ballot measure up for a vote this year.
