Examining the economic boost an NHL team will bring to the local economy

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas is one vote away from getting its own NHL team.  The official announcement is expected to come sometime next week, and people are excited.

"It's an unbelievable game," said Steven Avalyne, hockey fan.  "The skating, the speed, the physicality of it -- it's so exciting."

If everything goes as planned, Las Vegas will be home to the NHL's 31st team, and the team will hit the ice at the T-Mobile Arena by the 2017-2018 hockey season.

A hockey team in Las Vegas could also help grow the local economy.

"It's a very positive time, I think, in Las Vegas, and this just adds to the story," said Stephen Miller, UNLV Center for Business & Economic Research.

Many hockey fans here plan to head to the t-mobile arena for games.

"Oh I've been excited ever since I first heard about it and it's going to be great for this town," said Avalyne.

Miller says when the puck hits the ice it will likely boost the already growing local economy.

"If you attract new people who wouldn't have come here before then you have expanded the economy," Miller said.  "If you've hire people than you've expanded the income locally."

Kirk Brooks, the owner of Las Vegas Ice Center, has been a supporter of bringing the NHL to Vegas.  Brooks says the interest in hockey is big, and it has always been there, but he says he expects it to grow even more.

"Oh, I think it will explode just like it did in Phoenix, Dallas, and Nashville as far as kids wanting to play hockey is concerned, said Brooks.

With more than 14,000 deposits already placed for season tickets, a potential new team already seems to have a strong backing.

"If I can get ticket's I'll go," said Avalyne.
