Ex-Con Going to Trial in Child Rape Case

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas judge decided that an ex-convict from California should stand trial on charges of abducting a 13-year-old girl from a school bus stop and raping her at knifepoint.

The preliminary hearing for 48-year-old Richard Martin Schlacta was held Thursday afternoon.

The judge decided there was enough evidence to send Schlacta to trial in state court on charges including kidnapping a minor, sexual assault of a child, coercion and battery with a deadly weapon.

Schlacta has pleaded not guilty in the Aug. 28 attack. He could face life in state prison if he's convicted.

The judge set bail at $1 million after noting that Schlacta has nine prior felony convictions in California and one prior escape.
