Facebook helps police capture murder suspect

LAS VEGAS - Social media has grown to become one of the most helpful and powerful crime-fighting tools for police. A local case has shined a light on how important of a role social media can play in a criminal investigation.

Police in Las Vegas were able to catch a man accused of murder with the help of Facebook.  Authorities were searching for Frank Campis, a 55-year-old man from Arizona who was accused of shooting and killing a local mother near Maryland Parkway and Flamingo Road in late March.'

The woman he is accused of killing is Latoya Woolen.

Her 10-year-old daughter wrote a letter three days after her death that said in part, "I'm never going to see her again."

Woolen's ex-husband has also felt the pain of Woolen's death.

"Today I was feeling very sad. I say to myself, 'is she gone forever,'" ex-husband Ishe Smith said? "What's up there? What does God look like?"

However, a month later, a family that has lost so much finally has some answers.

Campis was arrested and charged with Woolen's death.  Police said the mother of one was shot in the back of the head outside of a Dollar Tree store.

Police said Woolen didn't even know Campis.

"Mistaken identity is what we were told. He thought it was someone else," Smith said.

Tracking Campis' trail through Facebook, detectives matched his profile picture with the same images they saw on surveillance video near the shooting. Police say they discovered his whereabouts the night of the murder through social media.

Campis lives in Arizona, but the night Woolen was killed, he checked into the Westgate Casino in Las Vegas.  Afterward, Campis checked into the Sunset Station Casino in Henderson.

"It's just so much anger. It's so much rage. I just can't even understand it," Smith said.

It's a powerful tool that police say helped catch their prime suspect.

Campis’ preliminary hearing has been set for June 5 and is currently being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.
