Families Prepare for Changes Due to School Overcrowding

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County School District wants to hear from parents before making any decisions on rezoning crowded public schools.

Last week, the district sent flyers, with information on public meetings, to the homes of students. District officials want to get as much input as possible on how best to handle the issue of overcrowded schools.

Some families could face having their children rezoned to different schools. Aric Miller and his wife, Shannon, have three children. The older two attend Reedom Elementary School. The school is what attracted them to the neighborhood.

"It's kind of a Catch-22. You find a great school and you want your kids to go there," Miller said. "It's frustrating because obviously somebody will have to move."

Reedom is among a number of elementary schools in the southwest valley where student population is over capacity.

The Clark County school board is considering a number of solutions to ease overcrowding including rezoning schools or going to a year-round schedule.

"That's what we are trying to do figure what we can do without building new schools and spending more tax dollars," said Carolyn Edwards, CCSD board president.

At the last public meeting on Jan. 7, there were parents who supported both options. Edwards says there are no easy solutions, but it's important to hear from every family that will be impacted.

"If you are happy with the solutions we also want to know that, otherwise we may be swayed in a different decision. We want to hear from everybody."

Miller said he is already preparing his girls for the possibility of a move to another school and the family isn't happy about it.

"Going forward we would like to see some long-term plan from CCSD rather than a short-term Band-Aid," he said.

The Tuesday night meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Sierra Vista High School. There will also be a public meeting Wednesday night at Silverado High School. The board is expected to make a decision by early March.
