Family devastated by death of two teens killed by suspected DUI driver

LAS VEGAS - A family lost two teen boys Saturday night in a car crash authorities say was caused by a drunk driver.

The teens were thrown from the car at the intersection of Judson Avenue and Marion Drive when the suspected impaired driver failed to stop at a stop sign, according to investigators.

The family says the reckless actions of the driver claimed the lives of 14-year-old Oscar Ayala and his cousin 16-year-old Moises Rivera.

"They had just left my house last night. It happened right at the corner near my house," said Brenda Covarrubias, the victim's aunt.

Covarrubias told 8 News NOW Oscar's mom was driving the boy's home.

"They ended up hitting her, and the car flipped into the desert," Covarrubias said.

The teens died on scene.

"Once I found out I just broke down. I just broke down," said Angel Reyes, the victim's cousin.

Reyes says he while Oscar was his cousin, he felt they were more like brothers. One thing Oscar loved was collecting sneakers.

"He would always talk about going to the Urban Necessities trying to win the heat locker and all that,” Reyes said.

Oscar's place to check out new shoes was Urban Necessities.

"It's probably one of the more exciting things about owning a shop is that you get to see these kids as they grow. He was just here a few days ago," said Jaysse Lopez, Urban Necessities.

Lopez owns the shop and when he heard about Saturday’s tragedy he knew right away he wanted to help.

"Starting right now we are donating a dollar from every transaction that we do in the store and online towards their GoFundMe," Lopez said.

Lopez added the fundraiser won't stop until the family meets their goal of $15,000 for funeral expenses.

The GoFundMe page has already brought in $2,000 through donations from loved ones.

As the family works to deal with their loss, they're also thankful how quickly many in the community have banded together to help.

"Nothing can bring my nephews back," Covarrubias said.

The suspected drunk driver, Pablo Torres-Esparza, is behind bars facing multiple DUI related charges. He's scheduled to be in court this week.
