FDA Orders Dog Food Recall

The Food and Drug Administration is ordering a voluntary recall of Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Chicken Dry Dog Food over concern of Salmonella contamination. The recall applies to 5-lb. and 28-lb. bags with the "Best By" date of June 17, 2011.

FDA inspectors found traces of Salmonella in a random test of the dry dog food. The food was manufactured on December 17, 2009. It was distributed to pet stores in 26 states including Nevada. The FDA reports the recall does not affect any other Natural Balance products.

The Salmonella warning applies to both pets that eat the food and people who handle it. Common symptoms include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Other symptoms include: arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. People who have come in contact with the recalled dog food and who experience any of these symptoms are urged to contact a physician.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled dog food are urged to return it to the place of purchase. For more information, contact Natural Balance Pet Foods' Customer Service line at 1-800-829-4493.
