Feds Deliver Report on Las Vegas Police Practices

LAS VEGAS -- The U.S. Justice Department has released its findings and recommendations following a review of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's use-of-force policies and practices.

Among the findings and recommendations:

  • Metro needs to better manage multiple officer situations. Metro should ensure supervisors and officers are prepared to handle these situations.
  • Metro should re-establish a specialized group of investigators designed to conduct deadly force investigations.
  • Metro should separate its use of force policy into several smaller, specific policies. Examples of stand alone policies include rifles, shotguns, and other firearms.

"I think it's safe to say that they were not keeping with best practices," said Bernard Melekian, director of Justice Department's Office of Community Oriented Policing. "They were certainly dated and quite honestly were clearly not meeting community needs."

The review began earlier this year, amid claims by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada and the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that police were involved in too many fatal encounters.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie called the recommendations "good" and "well thought out."

"I am not afraid of this report nor are they afraid of this report," he said of he and his officers. "Actually, in my humble opinion, I embrace this report."
