Fighting crime by fighting back

LAS VEGAS - A new program is making sure valley residents are armed, protected, and ready to "act".

The program, created by Allison Campbell, is called A.C.T. It stands for Armed Civilian Tactics and Training.

"It's a program that's actually comprised of self-defense moves and firearms," said Campbell.

Some of the people who attended the class were victims of domestic violence. Others were victims of sexual abuse. But, they all had one thing in common. They want to fight back.

"The world is a dangerous place and the idea and the mindset of 'Oh,it's never going to happen to me' is just not true," said Campbell.

Campbell runs her own self-defense academy at Victory Martial Arts.

We were pretty much shut in for the entire night. The windows were covered. The doors were locked.

"We want to make sure that we are at least giving the outside observer a little privacy so they're not seeing anything uncomfortable," she said.

The guns were real and so were the scenarios.

"Before we start any class, we actually pat down every single person when they come in and if they need to leave at all to go get something from their car, they get checked again," said Campbell.

The motto: Be the victor, not the victim.

Participants learn everything from a simple task, like drawing a gun, to stopping someone from pulling your hair.

Campbell believes feeling empowered in a violent world is everyone's right.
