Firearms Involved in Nearly 60 Percent of Nevada Homicides

Nearly six of every 10 homicides in Nevada from 2002 through 2011 involved a firearm, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety reported separately that firearms were also involved in more than four of every 10 robberies during those years but in less than two of every 10 assaults.

Of the state’s 1,950 homicides during that 10-year period, 1,157 or 59.3 percent involved firearms, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports. Handguns were used in 831 of those cases.

While firearms were used in 23,421 robberies, hands, fists or feet were nearly as popular as weapons of choice, having been used in 22,881 incidents.

Where gun use dropped off was with assaults. Of the 97,766 assaults reported, only 17,500 or 17.9 percent involved firearms.
