Fireworks Checkpoint Set Up on Mount Charleston

If you're looking to set off your own fireworks, you're going to want to be careful where you go. Safe & Sane fireworks may be allowed in Clark County, but they are not allowed up at Mount Charleston.

You'd be surprised how many people have fireworks in the car on their way up the mountain. Many think, because they are Safe & Sane fireworks, it's legal, but they're not allowed on federal land. That's why local, state and federal officials teamed up for a fireworks checkpoint.

Metro officials say that every car that makes the trip up the mountain will be stopped. They're particularly concerned because of strong winds, saying even the smallest sparkler could pose a huge fire threat to the area.

In addition, charcoal barbeques are also not allowed on federal land.

If you think you can get away with sneaking something up, you might want to think again. If you are caught, expect to pay at least a $250 fine.

"It's amazing to me, in my lengthy career, how many people look me straight in the eye and just tell you the boldest face lie thinking that you are stupid. We can tell when people are hiding things -- lying. Especially the type of people we catch up here are your normal folks that aren't paying attention. They aren't career criminals," said Metro Sgt. Rory Tuggle.

Within 20 minutes of the checkpoint opening, officers had pulled over three cars and all were caught with fireworks. Police say they're expecting a pretty busy day. Metro says each year they find more and more fireworks at the checkpoint.

Officers will also be conducting roving patrols on horseback to make sure everyone is following the law.

Officers have been conducting these checkpoints for some time now. NHP Troopers say they have confiscated more than 40,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from Pahrump headed for California over the last couple of weekends.
