Flooding Drenches Valley, Closes Roads

LAS VEGAS -- Northwest neighborhoods were pummeled by heavy rain and flooding Sunday that resulted in 18 swift water rescues, closed roads and left a muddy mess that could cost $500,000 to clean up.

Most of the rescues were handled by Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. The most serious rescue involved two people who were stranded in flood water on Kyle Canyon Road. Most of the calls were in the northwest part of the valley. The hardest hit area was Centennial Hills due to run off from Mt. Charleston, fire officials said. There were no reported injuries.

SLIDESHOW: Flooding Drenches Las Vegas Valley

Mt. Charleston and Kyle Canyon received about 4 inches of rain causing serious flooding. The Carpenter 1 fire last month destroyed vegetation on the mountain making flooding more likely and causing muddy and debris filled water to rush into the northwest area of the valley. Grand Teton Drive looked more like a river than a road. Tractors and earth moving equipment were being used to clear the roads.

Kyle Canyon Road will remain closed indefinitely because part of the road was washed away, according to Nevada Highway Patrol.

In addition, Farm Road is closed from Tenaya Way to Jones Boulevard. Elkhorn remains an alternate route. Motorists can also expect heavy debris on Cliff Shadows Parkway and Lone Mountain Road. Motorists are advised to avoid Grand Teton east of Durango Drive and Grand Teton west of U.S. 95.

U.S. 95 near Horse Drive was closed for several hours as water rushed over the highway. Motorists were stranded or forced to find an alternate route.

The flash flood warning expired at 7:45 p.m. Sunday. More rain is possible Monday.
