Floodwaters create scary experience for some kids

LAS VEGAS -- Most southern Nevadans know the dangers of flooding, but some children thought Monday's rainstorm was an opportunity to play near water and it could have cost them their lives.

Some children found themselves in dangerous situation when a wash filled with floodwaters at Hacienda Avenue and Buffalo Drive.

"I'm a little freaked out," said Jasmine Fryer, who helped pull a boy from floodwaters.

Four teens found themselves performing a swift water rescue of their own Monday. They were riding their scooters in and around the wash when a child got swept away.

"The scooter fell in there. He went to get the scooter and the water took him quick. It's no joke down there. It may be this deep, but yeah, it took him for a mile," said Robert Palmer, who helped save Josh Williams.

At least two others jumped in after the young boy eventually saving his life before emergency crews arrived on scene.

"You can subsequent ally be sucked into that pipe and there's no air inside that pipe. The water would be moving at a very rapid rate. Twenty to 30 miles per hour. You will not survive," said Tim Szymanski, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

He says firefighters responded to numerous calls involving stranded vehicles, but there were no water rescues. In the last 20 years, swift water rescues have declined dramatically. He says it used to be common to rescue 200 to 400 people. Most of the rescues now take place in outlying areas that don't have proper storm drains.

The Clark County Regional Flood Control District urges drivers, kids or anyone to avoid getting near floodwaters because even two inches can sweep away a person or a vehicle.
