Former Oklahoman Recounts Terrifying 1999 Tornado

LAS VEGAS -- The deadly tornado in Oklahoma is bringing back some bad memories for one woman who now calls Las Vegas her home.

Stephanie McGregor is originally from Moore, Oklahoma and lived there when the last major tornado hit in 1999. Her parents still live in Moore as does her sister, her niece and her nephew. She was thankful to learn they are all safe after Monday's tornado which left a path of destruction through the town.

McGregor is heading to Oklahoma Tuesday night and is dreading what she will see when she arrives in the town she spent her childhood.

McGregor was a freshman in college when she experienced what it was like to be in the middle of a tornado for the very first time.

"When it was close, you couldn't hear anything. It was like a train going through," she said.

The year was 1999 and McGregor remembered hiding in a bathtub with her niece and nephew who were just 2 and 4 years old at the time.

"I knew they were crying. I could see them crying and screaming, but you couldn't hear them."

That tornado left her hometown of Moore devastated, much like what happened again this week. McGregor, who is now the mother of three, says it was the youngest victims of Monday's storm that brought her to tears.

"It's just so heartbreaking. You just think you sent your kids to school and they will be protected there. I can only imagine what those parents are feeling," she said.

McGregor was able to get in touch with her family just hours after the tornado hit. Her sister sent her pictures of the neighborhood.

"Their house was damaged, windows blown out, things are impaled on the side of the house, the house across the street, south of her, just gone."

McGregor had already booked tickets to fly home for her niece's graduation this week, she says she's now heading back with mixed emotions.

"I am really excited to see my family, but at the same time my heart is breaking."
