Former teacher sentenced to 12.5 years

LAS VEGAS - A former Las Vegas kindergarten teacher was sentenced to 12.5 years to life for secretly keeping a teen girl in his apartment for two months.

Melvyn Sprowson was convicted in March on charges of kidnapping, child abuse and unlawful use of a minor in the production of pornography.

Sprowson, who met the 16-year-old through a Craigslist ad, started a relationship with her in 2013. When the girl's mother found about it, the girl asked Sprowson to pick her up.

Sprowson hid the girl in his apartment for two months saying he intended to marry her when she was older.

Sprowson represented himself at his trial.
