Garden Celebrates Struggles, Success of Civil Rights Movement

LAS VEGAS -- Freedom. Equality. Justice. Not mere words, but a movement that made civil rights mandatory in America.

Now, a new monument on the grounds of Palms Downtown Mortuary in Las Vegas is showcasing the struggles and successes in the country's journey towards liberty.

Dozens of people gathered Tuesday as Palm Mortuary unveiled the Garden of Dreams.

The monument features a majestic rock-pitched torch with a multicolored granite flame representing the ideals of our country.

For Daniel Chalk, the new monument is bittersweet. His grandmother, Luella Clark, died of natural causes just weeks ago, and her family asked that she be laid to rest next to the new Garden of Dreams.

"We were excited about it being new, and then also what it represented. Everything she represented you know, wow," Chalk said. "She would always say, 'we are all one blood' and being one blood is very important for everybody to recognize amongst the human race. We are all one people."

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman attended the opening ceremony. She said the monument is a reminder to the entire community.

"These pillars behind me that speak to dignity and freedom and justice is so absolutely, purposely pointed to what our community is about and what we are striving for together," Goodman said.

The space reminds all of us of the successes and struggles of the civil rights movement, visitors to the garden said.

"I mean, it is truly a place to just adore, find some peace within," visitor Ydoleena Yturralde said.

A celebration of yesterday. A hope for tomorrow. The garden of dreams is open to the public.
