GOP State Senator Halseth Resigns

LAS VEGAS -- Nevada's youngest state senator abruptly resigned Friday afternoon. Twenty-eight-year-old Republican State Senator Elizabeth Halseth was serving her first term before resigning.

Last fall, her husband was arrested for gross lewdness. In the past months, state senators say Halseth missed several legislative meetings and refused to return phone calls.

"We're not able to do the public's business on this interim committee based on the non-responsive nature of this particular member," said State Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford (D).

Republican state senators released a statement about Halseth's resignation, saying, "We appreciate Senator Halseth's service and commitment to the State and we understand and respect her decision to focus on providing for her young children. We wish Elizabeth the best of luck in her future endeavors and respectfully ask that as she transitions back into private life that she and her children be afforded the privacy necessary to move beyond this difficult time."
