Gov. Sandoval Tours Zoom School

LAS VEGAS -- Governor Brian Sandoval spent Friday afternoon making sure the new English Language Learner program in the state is off to a good start.

He toured Manuel Cortez Elementary School, which is one of 14 so-called Zoom Schools.

The $50 million initiative works to improve and develop language skills for students whose first language is not English.

The money goes toward preschool classes and making sure classes only have 18 to 21 students per teacher.

Governor Sandoval said he was impressed with the efforts at Cortez Elementary.

"It really is validating and inspiring for me to see them have these resources, have the teachers feel good that they can get to all their kids and get them the attention that they need," he said.

The principal at Cortez Elementary said she's pleased the program is providing help to students and teachers.

"The main thing is it is giving them early access to literacy by opening up the doors to pre-kindergarten as well as small reduced classes. It also provides my staff the opportunity for my staff and others staffs to learn how to work with English language students," principal Patty Rosales said.

Through the initiative, CCSD will get about $20 million over the next two years to help English Language Learners.
