Hammargren's eclectic collection up for auction

For many people in Southern Nevada, Lonnie Hammargren is a familiar face.

The former Lieutenant Governor and neurosurgeon opens up his museum-like home to the community every Nevada Day so people can peek at all of his odd and unusual artifacts.

“I kept collecting other things along the way, and then I didn't know when to stop collecting, and I still sort of don't,” Hammargren said.

One of Hammargen’s homes is being foreclosed upon, and he must now part with some of his collection which is made up of about 10,000 items.

“I just spent more money than I made.  Therefore, the bank took over the house and therefore, we're cleaning out the house with an agreement with the bank I can sell the things in the house and then they will take it over,” Hammargren said.

Hammargren currently has three homes in the area of Flamingo Road and Sandhill Road, and they are quite the sight to see.

“I bought this house in '72.  It was just a little bitty thing, and then I kept building on and on and on.  So I've had a lot of fun,” Hammargren said.

Inside the home is an eclectic assortment of collectibles ranging from a gondola to statues to a staircase Liberace once owned.

Hammargren insists losing his home and his belongings through liquidation isn't tough and says it's time to downsize anyway.

“I've got a wonderful house to move to with a good wife, and at 80, I can't keep up,” Hammargren said.

Hammargren says there are some collectibles that he refuses to part with including a space capsule from the Apollo program. He’s moving it next door to one of the two houses he's keeping.

That’s fitting because the profits from the auction will go to astronomy teaching programs.
