Happy Nevada Day! Celebrating the day Nevada was added to the Union

LAS VEGAS - Happy Nevada Day!  Nevada Day is a state holiday that is celebrated across the entire state of Nevada.

Nevada Day commemorated the admission of the state of Nevada into the union on Oct. 31, 1864.  However, since the 2000s the holiday has always been celebrated on the last Friday of the month.

On Nevada Day holiday all state, county and city government offices are closed, along with most schools and libraries. Some private businesses, like banks, also close to commemorate the holiday.

Here are some facts about Nevada Day courtesy of Piktochart.com:

  • The first grand celebration of Nevada’s admission was noted in Journalist Alfred Doten of the Gold Hill News diary in 1873 as a “grand celebration."
  • On Oct. 31, 1889, the Pioneer Society held a luxurious banquet in honor of Nevada’s 25th anniversary as the 36th state.
  • Oct. 1908, the recently organized State Federation of Women’s Clubs in Reno passed a resolution calling for a legislative bill to make 'Admission Da' a legal holiday. Sadly, nothing resulted from the initiative. If would take the state another 31 years to recognize Nevada’s birthday as an official state holiday.
  • The State Legislature passed a bill in 1933, which designated October 31 as “Nevada Day” and a discretionary state holiday. The new law “authorized and requested” the Governor to annually issue a proclamation for state citizens to display the United States flag and conduct “suitable exercises of a public nature” in observance of Nevada’s admission into the Union.
