Hearing Postponed for 2 Accused of Plotting to Kill Metro Police

LAS VEGAS -- A hearing to decide whether the two people accused of plotting to kidnap and kill metro police officers was postponed for two weeks.

A preliminary hearing for 42-year-old David Allen Brutsche and 67-year-old Devon Campbell Newman was expected to start Monday morning in Las Vegas Justice Court, but their attorneys asked for a delay to review surveillance video.

According to a police report, an undercover agent worked with the pair on the elaborate plot and arrested them when they said their plans were moving into an "operational phase."

The two were originally facing three charges, but all but one of those charges were dropped Monday. They are now facing a conspiracy to kidnap charge.

Newman'a attorney told the court his client was not as willing of a participant as investigators make her out to be.

"She got caught up in this and she was looking for a way out," Carl Arnold, Newman's attorney.

Brutsche was contentious toward the judge and said he doesn't recognize the legality of the court system.

"I need to object to the entire proceedings of this court," he said.

He also told the judge he did not want an attorney, but the judge said he must have legal counsel.

Brutsche and Newman are part of a group called the Sovereign Citizen Movement, a group the federal government refers to as domestic terrorists.

The preliminary hearing is now scheduled for Sept. 26.
