High Winds Leave Thousands Without Power

LAS VEGAS - Mother Nature packed a powerful punch for the valley, leaving behind plenty of damage and problems. Thousands were left in the dark for hours, waiting for power to be restored.

Late into Tuesday night, utility workers tried to keep up with the aftermath of severe winds. Workers for Cox Communications worked overtime to help restore cable to thousands of customers.

"They told us, ‘Be prepared. It's going to be really busy today,'" said Cox worker John Denick. "About three o'clock, it's when all the problems started happening and all hell broke loose."

For 14,000 NV Energy customers, it was lights out.

"I can't do any work on the computer, because I had to do charting on my patients," said resident Lata Shete. "I'm a physician, and the next thing is I can't do any cooking for my husband and myself."

Like many other residents in the valley, Shete returned home from work to a house with no power. She couldn't park her car in the driveway, because her gate is electric.

"(I) squeezed through the gate to get into the house. When I came into the house, there was sunlight, but by the evening, there was no light. So, I lit up my candles and been sitting in the dark," she said.

Left alone with her dog in the dark for hours, Lata planned to eat cereal for dinner. She started to appreciate the unexpected down time.

"I'm happy there's no more telephone ringing in the house. There's no computer. I'm happy (to) just relax. That's it, no noise."

That didn't last long. Her power was restored shortly after speaking with 8 News NOW.

The power outages affected areas in North Las Vegas, downtown Las Vegas, Stateline, Good Springs and Jean. 1,300 customers were still without power Tuesday night.
