Hiker Dies on Mount Charleston

MOUNT CHARLESTON, Nev. -- Two hikers were too distraught to speak about the tragic end to their Mount Charleston trip Thursday. They watched in horror as their friend fell 100 feet to his death in an area known as Big Falls.

"They had decided they wanted to try to climb up the side that required (doing) it safely with ropes and protection. They didn't do that. They tried to free climb the cliff face there, (and) got to a position where they couldn't go any further up," said Metro Sgt. Darin Garness.

They tried to climb down. The hike took a horrifying turn when one young man fell and died. Another was stuck on a cliff. Metro raced to the rescue.

Bradley Smith hiked up to Mary Jane Falls Thursday and knows the terrain can be threatening.

"Tragic story that they're here one minute and gone the next. I had a brother that flew off a cliff on an ATV 10 years ago, right at the power lines coming under the mountain," Smith said. "Died instantly."

While enjoying the great outdoors is really nice, these activities come with an inherent risk. Metro police say hikers must be prepared.

"When you start hiking off trail, and you start climbing and doing things without the proper equipment, and the proper protection, and the training, and the education for doing this type of stuff, it can become very dangerous," Garness said.

Hikers like Mike Isaacs like the trails up to Mary Jane Falls but he makes sure he's prepared.

"Bring water and everything like that, and stay hydrated," he said.

It took police and hikers several hours to retrieve the victim's body. His identity will be released by the coroner.
